I describe my pedagogical approach as equitable, student-centered, flexible, supportive, and empowering.
I value respect, academic integrity, and an open mentality. Students are consistently encouraged to share their thoughts and respond to others' viewpoint by showing understanding, tact and critical thinking skills.
As for instructional strategies, I never rely on one single method. In fact, although I endorse the adoption of a communicative approach, where learners are involved in meaningful, real communication settings where natural strategies for language acquisition are used, I am very well aware that students bring an array of learning styles to a class. Hence, in order to reach each and every one of them effectively and successfully I alternate audiovisual materials -- such as videos, charts, diagrams, slides, CD-ROMs -- with hands-on activities, cooperative work, and discussion forums. I like students to think about the class as a community. This means that in my classes, I have students spend some time in smaller groups in which they not only talk and think together, but write together. In keeping with this emphasis on a collaborative learning process, I have been pleased by enthusiastic student reactions. Furthermore, I have found that employing humor helps create favorable conditions for learning, and that beginning each lesson with a creative review of previous weeks’ materials helps with building relationship, which is a critical component of teacher-student interactions.
