About Emily
Hello! I'm Emily, a friendly and approachable CELTA qualified English tutor living in central Cambridge. CURRENT AVAILABILITY: Saturdays ONLINE I have an MA in Anthropology and a BA in History of Art from the University of Sussex. I aim to deliver high quality, creative, interactive lessons for people of all ages, backgrounds and levels and to provide cost effective sessions and flexible solutions for everyone. My experience: I completed my CELTA qualification in 2014 which covered vital teaching skills such as lesson planning, class management and extensive and variable teaching techniques. I have since had experience teaching adults and children from a wide variety of backgrounds and levels in the UK and abroad. I have been tutoring EFL, English, History, Media and KS3 Maths to private students for a number of years. This has included successful preparation for exams such as CPE, IELTS and GCSE. I aim to plan tailored sessions for the student's specific needs and interests and to develop a trusting and productive working relationship with the student. I worked in a secondary school as a teaching assistant supporting students with special educational needs (SEN) from year 7 to sixth form level across multiple subjects. The students I worked with have a wide variety of needs and my role included facilitating their learning as well as classroom management and 1:1 sessions. I have also taught English to younger learners (from 5 years old) focusing on interactive activities such as games and songs to improve the students speaking skills as well as concentrating on specific needs such as recognising and writing the alphabet. I have recently returned from teaching English in a Colombian public school. I worked with grades 9-11 and had 14 groups of up to 50 students per class. The role was voluntary, working with the Ministry of Education in Colombia and the non-profit organisation Heart for Change which focuses on cultural exchange. My role was to orchestrate activities with the students primarily to improve their spoken English and inspire them to have confidence in their learning abilities. As a native speaker I provided pronunciation help to both students and the teachers I worked with, helping them to teach, grade students and plan classes. I also taught a weekly class of ten adults at an unemployment centre. The diverse group of students changed slightly each week and had varying levels of English. This role required me to be flexible in lessons, catering to the needs of specific students and managing the class to ensure a level of cohesion throughout. The centre granted me complete freedom, allowing me to be creative in lesson planning, including games and activities to meet the students specific needs and create a friendly atmosphere allowing for lots of interesting discussion. The class was very popular and it was a rewarding experience for me seeing the students improve and develop their English skills with each other in an open, relaxed environment. Please don't hesitate to send me a message if you have any questions! I was Emily's coordinator (supervisor) during her stay in Colombia, working as an English Teaching Fellow (Jan-Jun 2017).
She has been an amazing volunteer, commited and responsible with all her duties. She had a great attitude in her classes and her students loved her.
I am positive you will enjoy having her in your team.Emily is a well travelled teacher that brings her cultural knowledge to the class and her students. She has worked for me on several projects and always been reliable and popular with her clients. Emily is a great tutor/teacher and educator.
