About Allison

Ni hao 你好! I’m Allison, a certified teacher with 7 years of experience teaching adults and 4 years of experience working as a secondary school Mandarin teacher. Born in mainland China and earned my Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Literature in Taiwan, I teach both simplified and traditional Chinese. I also hold a Master’s degree in Language Education from the University of Edinburgh, which gives me a strong foundation in teaching methodology and strategies to make your learning experience engaging, effective, and enjoyable. As a specialist in Mandarin Chinese, I love sharing stories and pictures of ancient characters with learners. This not only helps you appreciate the beauty and long history of the language, but also makes learning and remembering characters easier — and a lot more fun! About the lesson

I have over 7 years of experience teaching Chinese to adult learners and 4 years of experience teaching secondary students in UK. I’ve guided students through HSK 1–6, GCSE, A Level, SQA National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher. One of my adult learners, who started from scratch, recently scored 197/200 on the HSK2 exam. In my 2024–2025 GCSE cohort, 4 students achieved grade 7, 9 students achieved grade 8, and 2 students achieved grade 9. I believe learning a language should be exciting and motivating — never stressful or discouraging. Whether you want to chat with confidence, pass an exam, or finally master those tricky tones and characters, I’ll design a learning path just for you. Every lesson comes with customised materials created for your goals and level. If you’re preparing for exams, we’ll focus on going through key vocab list for your qualification and practise exam skills that boost your scores. If you want to speak more fluently, we’ll work with interactive dialogues and real-world scenarios. If writing is your focus, I’ll guide you step by step to improve both your characters and typing skills. With my strong background in Chinese literature, I’ll introduce you to ancient characters to appreciate the beauty and rich history behind the language. Because our lessons are one-to-one, you can learn at your own pace — no rushing, no pressure. And if you need help between sessions, I’m always just a quick message away.

Free Trial Lesson (ONLINE Only) I offer all new students a 30-minute online trial session. It’s a great way for you to experience my teaching style and see how I can support your Mandarin learning before committing to regular lessons. Feel free to get in touch if you’re interested! In-Person Lessons All lessons are £40 per hour. In-person lessons may include additional charges for travel time and costs depending on your location. You’re also welcome to come to my place in Morningside! Cancellation Policy If you need to reschedule or cancel a lesson, please let me know at least 24 hours in advance. Lessons cancelled without sufficient notice will be charged in full.
