About Raka

Hello! My name is Raka Kingsland, and I am the Lead Art Teacher for Indianapolis Public Schools. With over eight years of teaching experience, I specialize in creating art lessons that are both skill-building and fun, while encouraging students to express themselves through creativity and storytelling. I hold dual certifications in Art Education (K–12) and Special Education, and I am a proud graduate of Valparaiso University. My background allows me to adapt my lessons to meet the needs of every learner, ensuring that all students feel successful and confident in their artistic journey. What sets me apart is my ability to combine cultural perspectives, hands-on techniques, and inclusive teaching strategies. Born in India and raised in Indiana, I bring a unique lens to my classroom, connecting students to diverse artistic traditions while also building their technical skills. Students and families can trust that my lessons are professional, well-structured, and tailored to different age groups and learning styles. Most importantly, I strive to create a positive, welcoming space where creativity is celebrated, mistakes are part of learning, and every student has the opportunity to shine.

About the lesson

My teaching method is rooted in creativity, accessibility, and cultural storytelling. I use a hands-on, student-centered approach where learners explore art through guided demonstrations, open-ended projects, and meaningful discussions. I believe every student is an artist, and I adapt my lessons to meet individual needs, including students with diverse learning styles and abilities, thanks to my dual certification in Art Education (K–12) and Special Education.
A typical lesson begins with a short introduction to a theme, artist, or cultural tradition, followed by a demonstration of techniques such as color mixing, drawing, or working with shapes and patterns. Students then create their own artwork with my support and feedback, and we always close by reflecting on the creative process together. My lessons balance skill-building with creative expression, so students not only learn how to use materials but also develop confidence in their own ideas.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my experience as the Lead Art Teacher for Indianapolis Public Schools, where I teach K–5 and mentor other educators. I bring over eight years of teaching experience, a background in both Special Education and Art Education, and a passion for making art inclusive, meaningful, and fun. My own cultural background—born in India and raised in Indiana—also influences my teaching, as I love to connect students to art from around the world through stories, traditions, and symbols.
These lessons are designed for elementary through middle school students who want to build skills, confidence, and creativity in art. Whether a child is brand new to art, wants extra support, or is looking to extend their creativity beyond the classroom, my tutoring offers a positive, encouraging, and culturally rich space to learn and grow.
