  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

Japanese is my native language. I was born and raised in Japan, so I grew up speaking Japanese and experiencing Japanese culture in everyday life. Living in the United States has also helped me understand how Japanese can be explained clearly to English-speaking students.
  • Can you name a living, historical, or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language’s culture?

I would choose Hayao Miyazaki. His films introduce people around the world to many important aspects of Japanese culture, including respect for nature, family relationships, kindness, courage, and consideration for others. His stories also show how Japanese communication often expresses feelings in subtle and meaningful ways.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

One of my favorite Japanese expressions is “yoroshiku onegaishimasu.” There is no single, exact English translation because its meaning changes depending on the situation. It can express respect, appreciation, trust, and a desire to build a positive relationship. I think it beautifully represents the thoughtful nature of Japanese communication.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Japanese is more than a subject to me; it is an important part of my identity and culture. Teaching Japanese allows me to connect people across cultures and help students communicate with Japanese family members, friends, colleagues, and people they meet while traveling. It is very rewarding to watch students become more confident and experience the joy of communicating in Japanese.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the process of learning?

One of the main challenges is that Japanese sentence structure and writing systems are very different from English. Students may also find it difficult to choose the appropriate level of politeness. I help by dividing each skill into manageable steps and using practical examples, conversation practice, repetition, and personalized materials. Consistent practice and a supportive learning environment make a tremendous difference.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Through many years of teaching, I have learned that even a small success can completely change a student’s confidence. I have seen students who were initially afraid to speak begin using complete Japanese sentences after receiving patient guidance and encouragement. Experiences like these have taught me that students learn best when they feel respected, understood, and comfortable making mistakes.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Living in both Japan and the United States has given me a deeper understanding of language and culture from two different perspectives. It has helped me recognize expressions and cultural expectations that may feel natural to a Japanese person but require a clear explanation for an English-speaking learner. This perspective allows me to teach not only grammar and vocabulary but also how Japanese is actually used in real-life situations.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I have more than 22 years of experience teaching Japanese to students of different ages, backgrounds, learning styles, and ability levels. I personalize every lesson according to the student’s goals, whether they are studying for travel, conversation, school, business, or the JLPT. I also have experience supporting students with visual impairments, autism, and ADHD. When appropriate, I incorporate Japanese culture into my lessons through activities such as traditional and creative calligraphy. I am patient, encouraging, and dedicated to creating lessons that are practical, engaging, and meaningful. My goal is not only to teach Japanese but also to help every student develop confidence and enjoy the learning journey.
