About Johanna

¡Hola! I am a certified Spanish teacher with over 25 years experience teaching all course levels (Spanish I, Spanish II, Spanish III, Spanish IV, and Spanish conversation). I hold a bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in International Trade/Spanish and a master’s degree (M.Ed.) in Spanish education. In addition to my formal American studies, I have also been an international student. I was enrolled in a four-week language program in Salamanca, Spain, and on two different occasions spent six weeks studying in Puebla, Mexico. Each time I was abroad I lived with a local family, took undergraduate or graduate Spanish courses, and used the language on a daily basis. Later, I also resided in Mexico for a year where I lived independently and communicated with native speakers every day. As a public school teacher, I worked with both middle and high school students. I found it very rewarding to watch the students grow in their knowledge of the Spanish language and culture, and observe them using it on a regular basis in their day-to-day lives. Many continued their study of Spanish in college, and some even went on to use it regularly in their professional careers. I have had extensive experience working with adult learners, both privately and through continuing education classes at Emory University. At Emory, one of my roles was to prepare students for the ACTFL exam, a proficiency test that is recognized as the gold standard by many businesses and institutions. Some of my students had no prior knowledge of the Spanish language at all; 100% of my students passed the ACTFL exam. I also helped develop the curriculum that was used for Spanish continuing education classes offered at Emory. In addition to individual tutoring, I have also taught formal group classes, both online and in person. Whether you are looking for someone to offer individualized support for a current Spanish class or you have no experience with Spanish and want to learn it for personal or professional reasons, I can help. I’m passionate about Spanish; I truly enjoy sharing my knowledge of the language and culture with others.

About the lesson

As a longtime teacher, I understand that learning a language can be challenging and that not every student learns in the same way. For that reason, I can tailor activities based on the type of learner (visual, auditory, or interactive/kinesthetic) and can explain concepts in a way that each learner is able to understand.

Johanna is beyond extraordinary fabulous and comes up with ways to involve Dylan like reading younger books in Spanish and she assists Jacob with many questions translating back and forth fluency and pronunciation. Johanna is wonderful at tutoring all age groups and such an asset for my sons education.
