About Melissa

Hi I'm Melissa! I have an undergraduate degree from Texas Christian University specializing in education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, earning teaching certifications in the states of Texas and California. Teaching literacy with this group of people is done in a very unique approach.

During undergrad, I worked in Deaf Habituation using aural rehabilitation and Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) protocols, completing 54 clinical hours working one-on-one with clients.

I then completed two years of Master's level coursework in Speech-Language Pathology, where I saw clients of all ages with speech, hearing, language, and communication disorders.

My clients ranged from the ages of five years old to eighty-nine years old with a wide range of needs including needing phonetic and articulation speech sounds help to stroke patients relearning language and reading. I completed 31 additional clinical hours before leaving the program.

While I do not expect my clients to have any disabilities or disorders, that experience taught me how important it is to have multiple approaches for many learning styles and techniques, especially for the "non-traditional" learning type.

I also hold a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University, where I completed 254 practicum hours and 600 internship hours.

Altogether, my entire academic career has been built on working one-on-one with people to help them grow. You are not broken. Your learning style is not wrong. You just need a different approach. I provide that.

About the lesson

The way you or your children have been taught to read is often no longer developmentally appropriate for truly understanding what they are reading.

My lessons use multi-sensory techniques from Deaf education and speech-language pathology.

My lessons are for anyone of any age wanting to improve their literacy, comprehension, or skills in Standard American English Language.
