About Gabriela
I am a 2019 graduate of the College of Wooster. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and have worked in a pharmaceutical testing lab and in food quality control post-graduation. While still living at home, I helped both my older and younger siblings with math and science homework. While in college, I worked for three years as a lab assistant and tutor for the introductory chemistry laboratory students. I easily created rapport with my students, and I still keep in touch with some, getting updates on their academic and personal successes.
However, I also went through my own academic struggles. I am no stranger to the feelings of low self-image and helplessness that can accompany difficult periods in school. Those experiences allow me to understand how students may be feeling and may help them see me as a sympathetic resource, not as a person coming from a place of judgement.
I hope you place your confidence in me as a down-to-earth, collaborative tutor ready to help students thrive!

I only started to be paid for my tutoring services in college, but I have been tutoring my siblings in math and science since I was in middle school. I am among the eldest of 11 children, so I have had many years of experience working with many types of learning styles. With this experience, I am most comfortable working with students in the middle school through high school age group.
Though many people see math and science as an incomprehensible monolith, the truth is that there are many ways to learn it and many ways to teach it. I prefer to base my lessons off the materials provided by the student's own teacher so that I can get a sense of how the teacher works and the level of detail or depth of understanding they have in mind for their students. This also helps me maintain a continuity between the teacher's lessons and mine. For instance, I make an effort to use the same vocabulary so as not to confuse the student further by using different terms for the same concepts. I can also prepare practice questions or other work that mirrors what the student will see in class.
I use a collaborative approach with the student by letting them tell me where they believe they are struggling. We can move on from there, focusing on smaller areas needing clarification or going over the basic tenets of the subject, depending on where I see the disconnect between the student and the material.
I may spend a session giving more of an interactive lecture, revisiting topics covered by their teacher, but allowing the student time to take notes and ask questions at their own pace. They can interrupt me, ask me to wait or repeat myself, or ask for something to be explained another way without having to worry about affecting other students or classroom time constraints.
If a student prefers to work through problems or go over test corrections, I can walk that student through, step-by-step. We can discuss how and why an equation works the way it does, where they took a misstep, and how different parts of the lessons are connected for a more thorough understanding of the minutiae of the subject.
I am passionate about making science more accessible to everyone. I did not see myself as particularly talented in the math and science fields, but my math teacher in 8th grade changed that for me. I hope to provide that positive experience with math and science for others, and while I don’t expect to turn everyone into a future chemistry major, I do hope to at least turn it into a manageable challenge as opposed to an insurmountable one.
