About Shihyun (Emma)
Hi! My name is Emma, and I am an upcoming sophomore at Baylor University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry on the pre-dental track with the goal of becoming a general dentist in the future. I have always been passionate about science and math, and I enjoy helping students build confidence in subjects that can sometimes feel challenging or overwhelming.
I have previous tutoring experience working with students across multiple age groups and academic levels. My experience includes helping middle school students prepare for competitive math programs and competitions, tutoring high school students in both AP and general chemistry, and working with elementary students in math through virtual tutoring sessions on Zoom. These experiences have helped me develop a patient, adaptable teaching style that focuses on breaking down difficult concepts into manageable steps.
As both a tutor and a current STEM student, I understand the importance of strong study habits, problem-solving skills, and building a solid academic foundation. I strive to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace. My goal is not only to help students improve their grades, but also to help them gain confidence and become more independent learners over time.

My approach to tutoring is centered around helping students develop a strong understanding of mathematical concepts while also building confidence in their problem-solving abilities. I believe that every student learns differently, so I adapt my teaching style to match each student’s pace, strengths, and learning preferences. I focus on creating a supportive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and working through mistakes without pressure.
For subjects such as mathematics, algebra, statistics, and calculus, I emphasize step-by-step explanations and conceptual understanding rather than simple memorization. I break down complex problems into manageable parts and teach students how to recognize patterns, apply formulas correctly, and approach unfamiliar problems with confidence. I also incorporate guided practice, visual examples, and real-world applications whenever possible to make abstract concepts easier to understand and more engaging.
A typical lesson begins with reviewing any questions, homework, or topics the student is currently struggling with. From there, I explain key concepts using examples and interactive problem-solving, gradually encouraging the student to complete problems more independently as their confidence grows. I regularly check for understanding throughout the lesson and adjust the pace as needed. Sessions often end with a summary of important ideas, extra practice recommendations, and study strategies that students can use outside of tutoring.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my patience, adaptability, and ability to explain difficult concepts in a clear and approachable way. As a current STEM student, I understand firsthand the challenges students may face in math courses and how important it is to build both understanding and confidence. I aim to make learning less intimidating and help students feel more capable and motivated in their academic work.
My lessons are designed for elementary through high school students at a variety of skill levels. I tutor subjects including elementary mathematics, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, statistics, precalculus, and introductory calculus. Lessons can be tailored for students who need homework help, test preparation, foundational review, enrichment, or ongoing academic support.
