About Matteo
My passion for chess began with a fascination for how a seemingly simple board could hold such deep strategy, creativity, and intellectual challenge. This interest led me to study decision processes and analytical thinking through a B.A. in Cognitive Strategy and Game Theory, which strengthened my understanding of how players learn, adapt, and develop long-term mastery. For the past 8 years, I’ve coached students of all ages, helping them build strong fundamentals and a calm, confident mindset that supports thoughtful play. I approach teaching with patience, encouragement, and a focus on helping each student understand concepts in a way that feels clear, manageable, and engaging. I believe chess is not only a game but a training ground for strategic resilience and emotional discipline. Because of this, I place special emphasis on teaching students how to remain composed, analyze losses constructively, and recognize their progress. My coaching philosophy is centered on steady growth rather than pressure, and I’m committed to creating an environment where learners feel safe to explore ideas, ask questions, and develop their own style of thinking. I consistently adjust my teaching approach so every student experiences both challenge and encouragement. Outside of teaching, I continue studying new openings, analyzing high-level games, and participating in local tournaments to keep my understanding of modern strategy fresh. I enjoy bringing these insights into lessons so students can see how both classical principles and contemporary ideas shape effective play. Coaching chess remains deeply meaningful to me because it allows me to support others in building confidence, analytical skill, and genuine appreciation for a timeless and beautifully intricate game.

Chess becomes much more enjoyable when learners understand the reasoning behind each move, not just the mechanics of how the pieces work. My lessons emphasize strategic clarity, patient decision-making, and building a calm, thoughtful mindset. I start by helping students feel comfortable with opening principles, basic tactical patterns, and board awareness. Each concept is introduced through slow, steady explanation so learners never feel rushed or confused. We practice visualizing moves, identifying threats, evaluating safe squares, and building simple strategies that make early progress both achievable and rewarding.
As students grow, we explore intermediate concepts such as pawn structure, piece coordination, trading principles, and how to create long-term plans. I guide learners through annotated games, structured puzzles, and scenario-based exercises that help clarify why certain decisions lead to stronger positions. My goal is to build strategic intuition, allowing students to make calm, confident choices even in challenging positions. Together, we analyze mistakes gently and constructively so the learning process feels positive and motivating.
Advanced learners work on deeper planning, endgame precision, pattern prediction, and refinement of their personal playing style. We explore game psychology, time management, and methods for maintaining focus under pressure. By integrating strategy with emotional composure, students become more resilient and perceptive thinkers. Ultimately, my lessons develop players who not only improve their ratings but also gain a clearer, more reflective approach to problem-solving both on and off the board.
