About Thomas

Hi!

I am currently an undergraduate student majoring in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Structural. I have taken Calculus I, II, and III, Differential Equations, Fluid Mechanics, Statistics, and perform research in Geotechnical Engineering.

I have the pleasure of instructing students in a variety of settings including one-on-one lessons, the classroom setting, and tutoring centers (e.g., math help centers). My multiple years of experience in Math Competitions have equipped me with a deep understanding of the subject matter. Beyond my studies, I have served as a Teaching Assistant and Learning Assistant, in AP Statistics, Physics 1a, and Pre-calculus. My commitment to education is underscored by a genuine passion for fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment. I've thought quite a bit about the best way to have students work through new definitions and difficult concepts such as limits/series/sequences in Calculus II. It brings me great joy to see a student grasp a difficult concept and watch frustration and apprehension transform into joyous understanding. Moreover, mathematics is an emanation of the human spirit and conveying the beauty of mathematics is a central goal in my work with students.

About the lesson

I would be glad to help you. My education and experience were focused on Calculus 1 and 2, Precalculus, Algebra 1 and 2, SAT and ACT Math. I tutored STEM (especially Statistics and Mathematics) and Business (especially LEAF: Logistics, Economics, Accounting, and Finance and LIMB: Leadership, Innovation, Marketing, and Business Operations) mainly at the undergraduate level for the last 3 years. A main goal of teaching and tutoring is, “Make sure the students can do the work.” It helps if the student reads the textbook (or some other source) thoroughly, before it is covered by the teacher or the tutor. It also helps if a student asks an occasional question to show interest. I focus on guiding principles and opening the doors of opportunity for my students. We often do not even realize these doors or opportunities exist! When students do the right things, doors amazingly open.
