About David

I taught for many years at Columbia University and at Wellesley College, and I've also taught all kinds of piano students at a music school, and taught advanced students privately. I have three music degrees from Columbia University, where I spent several years on the faculty before moving on to teach at Wellesley College. I also studied piano with a few well-known teachers, at least one of whom must have been born before 1900 (he may have been seventy years older than me, but there's something to be said for having had contact with the source).

If you were eavesdropping, you might hear me playing Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt and Brahms, but I sometimes play more modern composers too.

About the lesson

I'm a kind and enthusiastic teacher who's ready to help you improve your musicianship and piano technique. I'm open to teaching adults, relative beginners and advanced amateurs alike, as well as older children and teens at any level.

My background is primarily in classical music, but when I was younger I played keyboards in a popular rock / funk band, and I wouldn't mind having some students whose interests lean more toward popular music.

I would expect to hear you play at each lesson, to offer you pointers on music and technique, to help you find a successful approach to practicing and improvement, and to set goals and assignments together with you.
