About Ioan Gabriel
I want to mentor students because learning Greek is more than mastering grammar and vocabulary, it entails entering a world that has shaped philosophy, theology, law, and politics for centuries. My goal is to help you not just read texts but think with them: to see how words carry arguments, ideas, and cultural weight. I enjoy guiding beginners as they take their first steps, just as much as I enjoy working with advanced students to sharpen their skills. For me, mentoring is about sharing the challenge and the joy of discovery, and showing how Greek opens doors into conversations that have shaped our intellectual world.

My academic background lies in Classics and Ancient Philosophy, which gave me a strong foundation in philology and close textual analysis. This training allows me to approach Greek across periods and genres, from classical literature to patristic theology and Byzantine historiography. My current focus highlights the intersection of law, language, and rhetoric. Alongside research, I am enthusiastic about teaching and supporting others in their study of Greek. I see learning Greek not simply as acquiring a language but as gaining access to a tradition that shaped philosophy, theology, law, and politics for centuries. I particularly enjoy helping students engage with the richness of Greek vocabulary, the precision of its grammar, and the creativity of its rhetorical techniques. Whether guiding beginners in their first steps or assisting advanced learners in refining their skills, I am eager to share the challenge and reward of working with Greek texts, both ancient and medieval. I ran a language seminar for Cambridge doctoral students, where we would collectively translate challenging and diverse texts.
