About Eugene

I have a Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience from UCLA with five years of university teaching experience and ten plus years of research experience across the fields of neuroscience, psychology, and biological psychiatry.

I completed my doctoral training at the Cognitive Neuroscience Ph.D. Program at UCLA’s Department of Psychology, where I taught courses in neuroscience, psychology, and research methods. My teaching in neuroscience and psychology covered a broad range of topics, including cognitive neuroscience; behavioral neuroscience; sensory neuroscience; clinical neuroscience; affective neuroscience; motor neuroscience; developmental neuroscience; cellular neuroscience; neuroanatomy; psychopharmacology; neuroendocrinology; circadian/sleep neuroscience; and the psychology and biology of aging. My research methods teaching covered experimental design, statistical methods, interpretation of results, and communication of findings via scientific writing and reporting. Before my Ph.D., I taught cognitive psychology for two years while earning my B.A. at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, where I double majored in Psychology and Philosophy. I have experience teaching in classroom, lecture hall, and one-on-one settings, and providing both in-person and online instruction.

In addition to teaching, I have extensive experience conducting scientific research and preparing peer-reviewed publications. My published work includes research on topics such as the biological, psychological, and environmental mechanisms of serious mental illness and the neurocognitive mechanisms of metacognition and conscious awareness. This background allows me to help students not only understand course material, but also develop the skills needed to read, evaluate, interpret, and communicate scientific research.

I enjoy helping students develop not only the knowledge they need for a particular course or assignment, but also a deeper understanding of how scientists approach questions, evaluate evidence, interpret results, and communicate their ideas.

My approach to tutoring is centered on helping students develop genuine understanding rather than simply memorizing information. I rely heavily on the Socratic method, guiding students toward answers by asking questions that encourage them to actively reason through problems, make connections, and think critically rather than simply providing them with the answer. I am particularly skilled at finding ways to make challenging concepts clear, intuitive, and accessible to students at different levels of knowledge. I adapt my explanations and teaching methods to each student’s background, goals, learning style, and areas of difficulty. I also draw on my academic training in neuroscience and psychology to shape my teaching around principles of learning, memory, metacognition, and related areas in ways that foster student retention and engagement.

A typical lesson begins by identifying the topics or assignments the student would like to work on and determining where additional explanation or practice would be most useful. From there, we work through the material together, with an emphasis on understanding how concepts relate to one another and applying them to new questions or problems.

What sets me apart as a tutor is the combination of my Ph.D. training, ten plus years of research experience, and five years of university teaching experience. I have taught students in classroom, lecture, laboratory, and one-on-one settings, and am comfortable explaining material ranging from introductory concepts to advanced scientific topics.

I tutor students in neuroscience; psychology; research methods and experimental design; statistics and SPSS; scientific/research writing; literature review and search; and understanding and interpreting, and critically evaluating research papers. I teach these subjects from introductory coursework through advanced undergraduate and graduate-level material. Lessons can be tailored to coursework, exam preparation, research projects, scientific writing, or simply developing a deeper understanding of a subject. I offer both online and in-person lessons.
