About Asher
I am a Biology tutor with 5 years of experience and a BSc in Biological Sciences with a teaching specialization. I have worked with over 185 students across all levels. My teacher training background means I bring a specifically developed pedagogical approach to my tutoring — not only do I know the subject deeply but I have been trained in a range of specific instructional techniques for developing understanding and have continued to develop and refine these through five years of tutoring practice. I am particularly effective with students who learn best through active dialogue and questioning rather than passive reception of explanations. My Biology teaching is collaborative rather than instructional — I engage students in active construction of their own biological understanding through questioning, discussion, and guided inquiry rather than primarily delivering explanations for passive reception, because the knowledge students build through active engagement is dramatically more durable than knowledge delivered to a passive audience. I use Socratic questioning as my primary teaching technique across all Biology topics, asking students to explain their reasoning rather than only to provide answers, because the explanatory process reveals the quality and completeness of understanding in ways that right-or-wrong answers cannot. My approach to difficult concepts uses the technique of deliberately introducing the strongest wrong answer — the most compelling misconception — and then systematically showing why it is wrong, because students who have explicitly confronted and refuted the wrong idea are far less likely to revert to it than those who have only been told the correct idea. Ecology teaching in my lessons specifically develops students' ability to analyze graphical and tabular ecological data — population growth curves, energy pyramids, food web diagrams — because this data analysis skill is tested heavily in examinations and is genuinely learnable through targeted practice. I use the research process as a teaching framework for molecular biology topics — how scientists designed the experiments that revealed the structure of DNA, the mechanism of protein synthesis, the nature of enzyme function — because the experimental reasoning that produced these discoveries is the same reasoning that students need to apply in their own investigation questions. My teaching goal is a student who genuinely participates in the construction of their biological knowledge rather than only receiving it.
