About Monica

I have been teaching at the college level in the US for over 15 years, both online and in person. I'm currently a tenured professor and department chair at a college near Boston.

My education is a mix of scrappy self-taught learning and elite formal education -- I did my graduate work at Harvard University, but I never finished high school. My approach to teaching reflects this; I like to think it's the best of both worlds, autodidact and academic.

Along with teaching, I am an active researcher and writer. One of my recent publications is in*Philosophy for Girls* (Oxford University Press, 2020), a collection of essays aimed at young adult readers, where women and queer philosophers introduce classic philosophical problems in a way that places girls at the center of philosophy.

About the lesson

I curate a short list of readings from foundational philosophical, mythological, and literary texts from around the world, customized to a student's interests and learning goals. Typically these readings are 5-10 pages each. The selection of readings reflects chronological, geographical, and social diversity.

Students choose readings from the custom list I've provided, and read and take notes on them in advance of our lessons, highlighting passages of interest and preparing questions to consider.

In our 1:1 discussions, we dive deeply into analyzing the texts the student selected. I explain and clarify elements that the student has identified as challenging to understand, and guide the student in developing knowledge and analytical skills that can be applied to a wide variety of texts.

Our discussions are wide-ranging and interdisciplinary, drawing on my expertise in philosophy, religious studies, history, classics, and other fields in the humanities. Depending on the student's interests, we might discuss topics including rhetorical structure, historical context, representation in popular culture, application of concepts to everyday life.

All levels are welcome, from beginners to advanced scholars. I primarily teach college-level students (of all ages) but have experience teaching high-school levels and young adults (14-18 years old) as well.
