About Sam
I'm a pianist, composer and producer with over 15 years of professional international experience and a PhD in music composition from Columbia University. I've collaborated and studied with some of the world's leading classical, jazz, pop and experimental artists and am passionate about sharing what I've learned along the way. As a composer my work has been performed by ensembles including Talea Ensemble, the Sun Ra Arkestra, Ensemble Korea, Mivos Quartet, the New York New Music Ensemble, Wet Ink Ensemble and JACK Quartet. As a jazz pianist and improviser I've performed and recorded with artists including Bill Frisell, Ingrid Laubrock, Tyshawn Sorey, Peter Evans, Joe Morris, Brandon Lopez, John Colpitts aka Kid Millions and Pheeroan akLaff. Recent honors and awards include a 2021 Charles S. Miller Award from Columbia University, a 2020 Fromm Commission and a 2019 Prix Langage Musical from the Conservatoire Americain.

As a teacher, my focus is on creating a relaxed, creative environment where musical exploration can flourish and evolve. My teaching approach emphasizes supporting my students' individual goals, drawing on my 15 years of experience as an internationally recognized composer and student of leading composers in the field like George E. Lewis, Georg Haas, Zosha di Castri and Chaya Czernowin to build the hands on skills and strategies to achieve them. My musical roots in contemporary jazz piano and improvisation are central to my teaching methods, emphasizing the power of spontaneity and critical reflection in unlocking our potential as musicians.
Lessons are designed primarily for intermediate to advanced students who already have formative music experience either writing, improvising, or playing music. Typically study is centered around hands on composing and/or theory assignments with in class discussion, critique and analysis.
