About Haozhou

I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree at The Juilliard School on a full scholarship, studying under the distinguished pianist and educator Robert McDonald. Before Juilliard, I trained with world-renowned pianists including Matti Raekallio, Susan Starr, Ignat Solzhenitsyn, and Gary Graffman (also teacher of Lang Lang).

I have received first prizes in several international piano competitions and have nearly 20 years of experience in performance and musical training. I have performed in major venues across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, including Alice Tully Hall in New York and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in China. I teach in both English and Mandarin Chinese, and offer online and in-person lessons (NY area).

I’ve been teaching piano for 6 years and have worked with students of all ages, from 3-year-old beginners to adult learners. Over the years, I’ve guided students through a wide range of goals—whether it’s preparing for competitions, conservatory auditions, or performances. I adapt my teaching to suit each student’s age, level, and personal learning style, always focusing on developing strong technique, musical understanding, and confident expression.

About the lesson

My main goal in a lesson is to get right to the heart of the music, and encourage students to find their own voice in their playing. The foundation of a pianist's technique is not only needs fast finger , but also needs the concepts of beauty of sound, touch variance, pulse control, wrist/hand/arm movements, and being able to create a large musical structure.

I hope to explore these concepts with my students so that they will have the necessary tools at their disposal to learn effectively and independently.
