About Cole

I have been a pianist for the past 26 years. I received my doctorate in piano performance from the University of Michigan. I have taught privately at all levels, as well as in university settings. I perform as a concert pianist, and you can also see my performances and discussions of music on my YouTube channel (See sample video).

About the lesson

I am familiar with teaching all levels, from absolute beginners, to advanced students. With beginners, I like to start with note reading (I use the Faber series), and I also like to train practical keyboard theory and ear training. We start with fun, simple melodies and very gradually increase the difficulty to whatever point the student wishes. For ambitious students we aim to get into classical repertoire (Bach, Mozart etc) as soon as they can, as that kind of repertoire provides the best technical and musical basis for whatever else a student may wish to do.

On the other hand, if you are an advanced student, and are looking to apply for colleges or competitions, then we work on subtleties of interpretation, and how to reach the absolute highest level of technical mastery.

My approach is a holistic one. I not only train all facets of musical mastery, but I also want to develop my student's enthusiasm and imagination. I want them to develop self-motivation and the mental skills necessary to succeed in music, and indeed, in many other fields. These skills include self-discipline, self-awareness, attention to detail, freedom of imagination and self-actualization.

This first lesson is free to allow you to get to know your teacher so that they can best meet your needs.

Details

For beginners, we start with 30 min lessons for $30/hour. Intermediate students can move up to 45 min as needed for $45/hour. Full hour lessons are reserved for only the most ambitious students. I am happy to make-up lessons missed by the student when possible, but only within my already established teaching schedule, and I cannot guarantee making up lessons missed by the student.
