About MaryAnne
I teach music theory and composition for the piano and voice at GCSE level, with particular emphasis on classical music, jazz and (alternative) pop music.
I am a first year biomedical science student and have achieved distinctions at grades 5, 6 and 7 in ABRSM Piano, Singing and Music Theory. I didn't get to take Grade 8 due to the coronavirus pandemic, instead I began to teach, first my sister, then family friends and now professionally. I have toured Venice, Florence and Rome as a concert pianist, a choral and a jazz singer, and have over a decade of classical and jazz experience.
I'm very bubbly and patient, and will start by assessing your current level after you've communicated your goals, and will structure a series of lessons where we can work together to achieving them.

I give lessons to people who are buddying musicians with no musical literacy, as people tend to have a natural sense of music without being able to put it into words. Beginners are often the people that come to me for lessons, as well as people struggling with composition.
My course is initiated with a free "get to know you" session where we explore your strengths and weaknesses, what you'd like to work towards, and the time frame you're looking at. If you've come for lessons on composition for example, it might be that you're trying to complete a piece for a particular show. Once we've come to an understanding, I'll plan out a set of lessons that'll form the foundations for what you want and build on them. By the time we get to the last section of my course, we'll be focussing solely on the target you initially provided.
My teaching method is mainly through honing the aural skills and matching them to what is on the page. Frequent repetition and every day exercises are often encouraged as practice outside lessons is vital in achieving fluency in any language.
My meticulous methods ensure an airtight foundation and a wider understanding of the music you're making and its origins, which allows for a more holistic approach.

Perfect! MaryAnne is a lovely teacher. She engaged immediately with my 8 year old daughter, putting her at ease and providing clear instructions and alterations to enable Audrey to progress through a series of warm up exercises with ease despite never having played previously. She was cheerful, smiley and very encouraging. MaryAnne was keen to understand what we wanted from the lessons and tailored an appropriate lesson plan for the next few weeks as well as a log to chart Audrey’s practise to understand her strengths and weaknesses. Audrey is very excited and happy to be having lessons with MaryAnne and actually asked for another lesson today!
- Penny's daughter Audrey is the sweetest! She's very calm, easy to teach and keen to learn. She stayed engaged for the entire lesson and actually asked me to teach her some more! She's very musically inclined and has a good ear.MaryAnne's response :
Penny is a great helping hand herself, as with a younger student it gets a bit difficult over the phone. She actively asks questions that bolster Audrey's learning and plays a pivotal role in the teaching process as a physical guide to accompany me.
Perfect! MaryAnne is extremely lovely and warm, I left our first lesson looking forward to our future lessons and also comfortable with her. She’s a pure professional that will answer any question no matter how silly you may think they are. Definitely recommend!
- He's a very warm and welcoming individual, with a great sense of focus. Teaching him is a pleasure, and he was prompt joining the session. With a keen idea of what he'd like to learn, it's very easy to guide him in the right direction in his pursuit of knowledge.MaryAnne's response :
