About Phong

Hi, I’m Phong, a Year 3 student at the National University of Singapore studying Quantitative Finance and Data Analytics — and a pianist first.

I began piano at r and spent eight years in the professional piano performance formal program at the Vietnam National Academy of Music, the country’s leading conservatory, before moving to Singapore for university. Along the way I earned ABRSM Grade 8 Practical with Distinction and Grade 5 Theory, and won a bronze medal at the 2018 Ginastera International Music Competition in Chiang Mai.

Conservatory training gave me strong technique and stage experience, but it also taught me something more useful for teaching: I know exactly what it feels like to be stuck on a passage, nervous before an exam, or bored of scales, and I know the small adjustments that get you through. My own teachers were patient and demanding in equal measure, and that is the balance I bring — lessons are relaxed and encouraging, with clear standards and steady progress.

I want to teach because I’ve seen how much confidence piano gives people, children and adults alike, and I enjoy helping students find that for themselves. I’m friendly, reliable and easy to reach between lessons if you have a question about your practice.

About the lesson

I teach piano to children from about age 5 and to adults, from complete beginners up to ABRSM Grade 8, at your home or online.

Every student learns differently, so there is no one-size-fits-all program. In our first lesson I find out what you want from piano — exams, playing pieces you love, or simply enjoying music — and build the plan around that. Lessons balance three things: solid technique (posture, hand shape, tone, scales played musically rather than mechanically), reading skills (sight-reading and basic theory woven into your pieces so it never feels like homework), and musicality (phrasing, dynamics and really listening to yourself). Drawing on my conservatory training, I focus on good habits early so you don’t have to unlearn them later.

Exam students prepare all four ABRSM components — pieces, scales, sight-reading and aural — with a mock exam before the real one. Lessons run 30, 45 or 60 minutes depending on age and level. Trial lesson available.
