About Ian

Ian’s work is driven by a simple principle: creative careers should be possible without exhaustion, exploitation, or compromise.

Ian Oliver

Ian Oliver is a creative entrepreneurship specialist, educator, and program designer working at the intersection of artistic practice, economic agency, and sustainability.

He is the founder of Creative Enterprise Lab (CEL), an initiative dedicated to supporting artists and creatives to build viable, sustainable careers without compromising creative integrity. Through CEL, Ian delivers training, mentoring, research, and institutional partnerships focused on creative entrepreneurship, professional development, and humane approaches to work in the cultural sector.

Ian has over 15 years’ experience working across Ireland and Europe with artists, freelancers, universities, arts organizations, development agencies, and public bodies. His work is grounded in lived experience: as a creative practitioner, freelancer, organizational leader, educator, and program manager operating within the realities of funding volatility, precarity, and cultural labor markets.

He previously served as Head of Artistic & Creative Development at the Centre for Creative Practices, where he worked with over 1,500 artists, delivered training and mentoring to more than 1,000 creatives and 250 organizations, and helped build one of Ireland’s most internationally recognized independent arts organizations. Under his leadership, CFCP received significant national and European recognition, including awards for innovation, inclusion, and cultural impact.

Alongside this, Ian has held senior roles in creative entrepreneurship education, including Head of Entrepreneurship & Training Development at the Creative Entrepreneurs Academy, where he designed and delivered over 25 CPD and career development programs, provided more than 2,000 hours of mentoring, and worked closely with higher education institutions, Local Enterprise Offices, and international partners.

Ian’s professional background spans creative practice, business development, education, communications, and EU project management. He holds postgraduate and honors qualifications in business and has developed accredited and non-accredited programs in creative entrepreneurship, career sustainability, and enterprise skills for creatives across disciplines.

What distinguishes Ian’s work is his commitment to honest, human-centered practice. He is particularly interested in the relationship between economic insecurity and mental health in creative work, and his programs explicitly address burnout, imposter syndrome, neurodivergence, workload design, and the emotional labor of cultural production. His approach rejects hustle culture in favor of realistic pacing, fair value, and long-term resilience.

Outside of his formal work, Ian remains actively engaged with the cultural sector as an audience member, advocate, and supporter of independent creative practice. He has a long-standing interest in music, photography, film, and contemporary culture, and continues to value the informal, social, and community spaces where creative ideas are shared and developed. He is motivated by curiosity, conversation, and the belief that creative work matters — not only culturally, but socially and economically — and that those who produce it deserve the tools and conditions to sustain their lives and practices with dignity.
