About Nancy

My philosophy in teaching saxophone revolves around the idea that every student deserves personalized instruction that balances technical mastery with creative freedom. I prioritize establishing a solid technical foundation: efficient breath control, precise embouchure, finger dexterity, posture, articulation, and tone quality are all crucial for healthy, expressive playing. Intonation and rhythmic accuracy are key focuses to ensure students develop a polished and musical sound. I integrate improvisation early on, encouraging students to explore scales, rhythms, and phrasing in a supportive environment, building confidence in their own musical ideas. Music theory is taught contextually, always connected to what the student is playing or improvising, making complex concepts accessible and meaningful. I customize repertoire to each student’s interests, spanning jazz, blues, pop, and classical music, keeping lessons engaging and motivating. Together, we set clear goals and design practice routines that promote steady growth and enthusiasm. Technology such as recording devices, backing tracks, and tempo apps enhances practice and fosters self-reflection. One of the most gratifying moments in my teaching was watching a student develop from a hesitant beginner to a self-assured performer, embracing improvisation with joy and creativity. My ultimate goal is to nurture saxophonists who are technically confident, artistically expressive, and passionate about their musical journey.

About the lesson

I approach saxophone teaching as a holistic process that combines technical discipline, musical understanding, and emotional connection to the instrument. My lessons begin with core technical skills such as posture, breath control, embouchure formation, finger agility, articulation, and timing. These elements build a solid framework that supports expressive playing and long-term vocal health for the instrument.

I tailor each lesson to the student’s musical preferences and goals, whether they are interested in jazz improvisation, classical repertoire, blues phrasing, or modern pop tunes. I integrate theory and ear training into lessons naturally, encouraging students to internalize scales, intervals, and chord structures to improve improvisation and sight-reading skills.

To support efficient practice, I use digital tools like recording software, metronomes, and backing tracks to provide immediate, objective feedback. I also emphasize the importance of performance experience, coaching students in stage presence, confidence building, and audience engagement through recitals, school bands, and community ensembles.

A highlight of my teaching career was mentoring a shy student who transformed into a confident soloist by the end of the school year through focused technical work and encouragement. My mission is to cultivate saxophonists who are not only technically capable but also creatively inspired and emotionally expressive.
