About Sam
I'm Sam. I'm a former teacher, a professional writer and a published author.
I taught for seven years in independent and SEN and independent schools in Brighton and London, mostly English and history at GCSE and A level. I've worked with students with dyslexia, autism, ADHD, language needs, anxiety, Down syndrome, and social, emotional and mental health needs.
I have a first class degree in Culture, History and Literature from the University of Brighton. I studied fiction from the Enlightenment to the present day, along with the history and politics behind it, and I still love helping students see how a text connects to the world it came from.
For over 10 years I've worked as a professional writer, including copywriting, ghostwriting and creative writing, mostly for charities in mental health and housing.
I tutor because I enjoy helping young people grow in confidence as readers and writers, and I can show them how real writers plan, draft and edit.

I am person-centred in my approach, and my lessons are shaped around the student. In our first session, I'll find out what they enjoy, what they find difficult and what they want to achieve, and we plan the lessons together from there.
I adapt the pace and structure to suit each student, including those with special educational needs.
I want every student to feel relaxed and safe to ask questions, try ideas out and make mistakes, because that is when they learn best.
I teach English to students aged 8 to 18 and can help with:
- Textual analysis: reading closely, understanding themes and context, and writing about them clearly
- Creative writing: finding ideas, planning, drafting and building a confident voice
- Exam, GCSE and A level preparation: essay structure, exam technique and revision
I am happy to have an introductory call so you and your child can see whether we are good fit before committing. I teach online and can also offer lessons in person in south London.
