About Yat

Hong Kong violist Yat Lee has been performing extensively across Europe, the United States, Asia, and the Middle East, where he performed in prestigious concert halls such as the Victoria Hall, Musikverein Wien, Wiener Konzerthaus, Berlin Konzerthaus, Royal Albert Hall, Opera de Monte Carlo, and KKL Luzern.

As an avid chamber musician, he has performed with eminent musicians such as Maxim Vengerov, Nobuko Imai, Liviu Prunaru, Renaud Capucon, Antonio Lysy, among others. He has been invited to festivals such as Wien Modern, Prussia Cove, Stauffer, Pablo Casals, Gstaad Menuhin, Megeve, Bellerive, Kuhmo, and Beare’s Premiere Music Festival. He has appeared on worldwide television networks, such as Leman Bleu, ORF, and RTHK.

Yat was a semi-finalist at the Cecil Aronowitz and Oskar Nedbal viola competition. In 2018, he received 2nd Prize at the Kreisler Institute Competition, Vienna. He is also a scholar of Dr. Martha Sobotka-Charlotte Janeczek Stiftung and the Bei Shan Tang Foundation.

As an orchestral musician, he has appeared as principal violist at Menuhin Soloists, Klangforum Bern, Webern Symphony Orchestra. He is a guest player at the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Musicus Soloist Hong Kong, and has performed under the baton of renowned conductors such as Christoph von Dohnányi, Kirill Petrenko, and Daniel Harding.

Lee studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna and the International Menuhin Music Academy with full scholarship, under the tutelage of Ivan Vukcevic, Maxim Vengerov, Gabor Takacs Nagy, Wolfgang Klos, and Ulrich Schönauer.

Lee is currently a student at the Manhattan School of Music studying under Pinchas Zukerman and Patinka Kopec with full scholarship.

Lee plays a fine c.1800 John Betts viola kindly loaned to him by the PostScript Collection through the Beare's International Violin Society.

About the lesson

Playing the instrument in the right way is vital for further development of the students to express themselves through the sound they make. I believe that each student is unique, each of them are built differently, and it is my job to find a way for them to play the instrument that adapts to their individual physicality and quality.

I adapt my way of teaching to the needs and goals of the student, it can be in a more fun, enjoyable, interactive approach with younger students, and with adults/advanced players, I can explain complicated concepts of playing and approach the lesson in a more professional manner.
