About Matthew

(Name: Matthew Wicks Age: 31 Current town: Norwich, Norfolk)
I am Matthew and I hold an MA in Modern History and a BA in History and Politics. Currently training as a History teacher in my own right. Previously worked as a supply teacher within Norfolk and Suffolk schools. (Before that from March 2024 to February 2025 I worked as a classroom assistant in Norwich, Norfolk). I achieved a 2:1 in BA History and Politics at The Open University which I studied between 2017 and 2022. This allowed me to build up experience with using sources, undertake independent research and develop into someone who put conscientious and measured thinking into historical and political arguments. I remain very proud of my experience with the OU. Following my BA I undertook studies in MA Modern History at UEA in 2022, I graduated in 2023 with a Masters with Merit. The majority of my grade was on a 60+ page thesis which I wrote about Norwich during the time of the French Revolution. A study close to my heart as it allowed me to look more in-depth at the city during a period that has long intrigued me. Additionally, I hold A-levels in History, English and Politics alongside relevant qualifications in English, Maths and Science at GCSE level.

About the lesson

My lessons are welcome to everyone. From young people studying for GCSEs and A-levels to curious adults who might be wishing to sharpen up their knowledge in areas they want to know more about! My lessons take place in evenings and weekends and run for 1-2 hours each (depending on what the pupil needs from the session). As someone who was an enthusiastic historical hobbyist, before taking the decision to commit to intensive studying, I am happy to tutor people at many levels, regardless of however they may wish to apply my knowledge! From me you will receive tailored tutoring delivered by a graduate with six years' experience of studying history at under- and post-graduate levels. I specialise in European history stretching from the French Revolution to the Second World War (1789-20th century). A period where Europe steadily came to throw off the shackles of the ancien régime and embrace competing visions of modernity. Visions that saw hopeful idealism blended walk hand-in-hand with brutal terror! Alongside this I have extensive experience studying and writing about the ideologies that came to shape the twentieth century; namely liberalism, communism and fascism! I'm looking forward to working with you!
