About Jacob
Starting with the piano when I was 5 years old, to moving on to bass and guitar for several bands and my own solo projects, I have a wealth of experience in music performance both in India and the U.S.A. I'm keen on finding students with a desire to create and improvise, regardless of what level you are currently at.
My lessons are not that of a typical instructor's where we would focus on scales, sheet music, or jazz standards - I want to share what I've learnt from playing different instruments in various styles, and how all those lessons can be distilled into understanding music at a very fundamental level.
Presently, I am enrolled in a doctoral program at Harvard University, pursuing human auditory perception. I am fascinated by the human capacity for emotion perception through music and will bring that enthusiasm to your musical pursuits! I appreciate students with a willingness to learn, a curiosity for music and a desire to have fun while doing so!

About the lesson

- Our first conversation will be aimed at gauging your musical interests and capacity. We will take a stab at rhythm and melody exercises, and discuss what genres of music the you listen to and wish to play. We will set reasonable timelines and expectations for your personal growth.
- Typical Lesson: I like to break up a lesson into 3 blocks: First, we will review any homework assigned (theory or performance) before heading into the lesson for the day. New exercises based on the given lesson module will be demonstrated and the student will be asked to repeat them. The second block is more theory driven: we will go over chords and modes based on the given lesson module in an attempt to inform the student about ways to improvise and find patterns that help them express and create. In the final block, we get to improvise over songs that we've selected beforehand and try to deconstruct ways in which to draw patterns between notes and phrases.
