About Adrienne

Hello! I am a piano teacher with over 4 years of experience and 200+ students taught. My teaching covers classical, jazz, and popular piano styles, and I work with students from their very first lesson through to diploma and conservatoire preparation level. What drives my teaching is a genuine love of music — specifically, the experience of being able to sit at a piano and play something beautiful, and the desire to help as many students as possible access that experience at whatever level is right for them. I am experienced with ABRSM and Trinity grade examination preparation at all levels, and I am thorough in preparing students for every component of the examination, not just the pieces. I am also highly experienced teaching students who are not working toward examinations — adult returners, recreational players, students who want to learn specific pieces — and I tailor my approach completely to each student's goals. My lessons are warm, demanding, musically rich, and carefully paced to the individual student. I believe that every student can make genuine musical progress with the right instruction, and I have seen this belief confirmed repeatedly throughout my teaching career.

About the lesson

The most important thing I try to give every piano student is an ear — the ability to listen critically and honestly to their own playing, hear what it actually sounds like rather than what they intended it to sound like, and use that hearing as a guide to continuous self-improvement. This ability is what separates students who develop rapidly and consistently from those who practise diligently but make slow progress, because without it, practice reinforces mistakes as efficiently as it reinforces correct playing.I develop this critical listening explicitly and from the beginning, using recording, guided listening exercises, and careful in-session feedback that trains students to hear what I hear. Alongside this, I develop the technical foundations — hand position, finger independence, tone production, pedalling — that are necessary for the instrument to respond as the player intends.I cover classical repertoire from the Baroque period through to the twentieth century, as well as jazz and popular styles for students who want to develop in those directions. I prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity grade examinations with thoroughness and detail, covering not just the three pieces but the scales, arpeggios, sight reading, and aural tests that are often neglected in favour of the repertoire. For adult learners returning to the piano after a long absence, I have a particular approach that honours what they already know while efficiently rebuilding what has been forgotten.
