About Mikey

I began playing the flute at the age of six, with a mixture of self and classical tuition. I studied with contemporary classical composers and world percussionists, before moving to London to study classical, jazz and extended techniques at Goldsmiths University, with a focus on combining voice with flute. In 2010, at the age of 26, I began touring the world as Bird Radio, using voice, flute, live looping and effects to perform original instrumental compositions and songs. I have studied traditional folk musics from around the world, with a strong interest in Japanese Shakuhachi Music and Middle-Eastern scales / maqams. lecture in music and creativity at Goldsmiths University and have been teaching for 20 years. I like to think of the flute as my first language, a direct form of expression, and believe in careful listening and tailored, enjoyable solo practice sessions, complemented by playing in duos or groups as the best way to build confidence, intonation and technique.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching starts with you and what your interests are. We look at how much time you are able to dedicate to practice, and prefer a relaxed low pressure / high enjoyment atmosphere for my lessons. From the very beginning we will improvise together, and regularly change practice routines so your learning doesn't become too repetitive. I am very careful to listen to you and your body and make sure your posture is relaxed, which leads to less fatigue, better tone, technique and breathing. We will build a repertoire that interests and inspires you. Lessons can work towards exams, but my teaching philosophy will always centre around music for enjoyment. Improvisation often leads to composition, and as an experienced sound engineer and music producer, I can also support you through making your own recordings. If you are interested in combining your playing with looping / effects or other technology, we can also develop those skills together.
