About Dr Despina
I grew up in Greece, where I began my teaching career in primary schools. While completing my master’s degree in Sociology of Education, I worked at a civil non-profit company, teaching English as a Foreign Language to adult immigrants and developing my expertise in supporting diverse learners. This experience ignited my passion for educational research and led me to pursue a PhD in Education at the University of Nottingham, a prestigious Russell Group institution, where I specialised in teacher professionalism. I have taught educational modules and tutored a wide range of international students at university level, with a particular focus on supporting Chinese students. Having experienced the transition to a new academic context myself, I am attuned to the language and cultural challenges international students may encounter. My commitment to teaching excellence has been recognised through a £1,500 award for outstanding achievement in the 'New to Teaching in Higher Education' programme, as well as a Faculty SEM Commendation for enhancing the student experience in Autumn 2022/23. Alongside teaching, I have over five years' experience conducting funded research at the University of Nottingham. Recently, I was awarded a £10,000 scholarship to lead a research project on teacher retention in England. I have also contributed to national and international research on teacher professionalism, culminating in my co-authorship of Teacher Professionalism During the Pandemic: Courage, Care and Resilience. As a dissertation supervisor, I have guided students through the complexities of academic research and writing, supporting them in achieving consistently high distinction to merit outcomes. I am deeply committed to helping students strengthen their academic writing and research skills to realise their full potential.

My tutoring is grounded in an evidence-based, student-centred approach, shaped by my extensive experience teaching and supervising at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I specialise in helping students develop critical, independent thinking alongside the methodological rigour required for academic success. Teaching Methods and Techniques I employ a combination of direct instruction, guided inquiry, and dialogic teaching. My sessions are designed to break down complex concepts—particularly in research methods, leadership theory, and academic writing—into clear, manageable components. I emphasise critical engagement with literature, clarity of argument, and methodological precision. For international students, I provide targeted support in academic English and writing conventions, drawing from my in-depth understanding of their specific challenges. A Typical Lesson Plan A typical session is structured around a clear objective—whether refining a literature review, planning a research design, or enhancing writing clarity. We begin with a brief diagnostic discussion, followed by focused teaching, practical exercises (e.g., mapping a research proposal), and conclude with a reflective review and action points for independent study. What Sets Me Apart What distinguishes my tutoring is my breadth of experience and deep academic expertise. I have taught on the Master’s programme in Educational Leadership at the University of Nottingham, delivering modules such as Issues of Educational Leadership, Successful Leadership and Change, Leading Learning, and Practice-Based Inquiry (focused on research methods). I have supervised numerous dissertations at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, covering topics from educational leadership and school improvement to inclusive education. Who My Lessons Are For I tutor undergraduate and postgraduate students, particularly those studying education, educational leadership, or social sciences more broadly. My lessons are especially beneficial for students undertaking dissertations, navigating research methods, or seeking to strengthen their academic writing—whether native or international students, with particular expertise in supporting international learners in adapting to British academic standards. I offer flexible online teaching, enabling access and support regardless of location.

Choosing Dr Despina as my dissertation supervisor was one of the best decisions I made during my MA in Education. My research focused on technology in education and the impact of digital learning tools on student participation, and she guided me through every stage with patience and genuine enthusiasm. What I appreciated most was how easy she was to talk to and how encouraging she was, especially when I felt unsure about my ideas. Her feedback always pushed me to improve while still making me feel confident in my abilities!
Dr Despoina is amazing! had a great experience working with her during my Master’s in Education. She supervised my dissertation on inclusive education and international students’ experiences in higher education, and her support throughout the process was huge!!
I had the opportunity to work with Despoina during my Master’s in Education, where she supervised my dissertation on leadership in education and how school leaders influence school culture and teacher motivation. I graduated with High Distinction, and honestly, I could not have done it without her support and guidance.
From the beginning, she really took an interest in my topic and helped me shape my ideas into something much stronger and more focused. Working with Despina has been a truly transformative experience. As an international student preparing my Master’s dissertation in Inclusive Education, I initially struggled with academic writing and research design. Despina’s feedback was always clear, constructive, and insightful. She helped me refine my research questions, structure my chapters, and develop stronger critical analysis.
