About Edward

I am a Double-First-Class Classics Graduate from the University of Oxford, where I graduated at the top of my cohort with the Gibbs Prize and was awarded the Holbrooke Scholarship in my second year.

I began Classics from scratch, and was the first student at Oxford to learn both Latin and Greek through spoken, immersive methods, giving me a strong command of both 'active language' teaching and traditional grammatical approaches. I have first-hand experience of progressing from beginner to advanced levels, and can teach effectively at all stages, tailoring my teaching precisely to each student’s aims, whether exam-focused or for broader understanding.

My expertise covers the entire ancient world, from Homeric Greek to the late Roman Empire, with a firm grounding in language, history, and literature. I take a rigorous, methodical approach to teaching, combining detailed study with a wider view of the ancient world and its context.

Above all, I aim to foster enjoyment and curiosity, so that students come away genuinely engaged with and motivated by Classics, whatever their background.

About the lesson

Classics is a broad subject, and I always aim to adapt each lesson to a student’s specific needs, balancing close attention to detail with how this work contributes to a wider understanding of the ancient world.

Latin and Greek can be taught either through spoken, immersive methods which develop fluency and intuition, or through a more traditional focus on grammar, translation, and close textual work. I teach Ancient Greek and Roman History by period and/or theme to provide strong contextual understanding, while literature lessons are tailored to the student's required texts, integrating linguistic, historical, and literary analysis.

Lessons can be flexible, typically lasting between 30 minutes and one hour and are suitable for all ages and abilities, from school pupils, to university students and adult learners.
