About Veronika

I am currently doing a DPhil at the University of Oxford and my research focuses how animals form an understanding of the world and the brain representations that underlie knowledge of relationships between events and objects in the world.

A lot of the things we know or do in our lives don’t necessarily require understanding. For example, skills such as riding a bike or skiing are almost automatic. We can also learn facts about the world without any particular understanding, for example that Paris is the capital of France. But understanding something would imply that you can then infer that Paris must be the seat of the French government. Once you understood this you could also apply this knowledge to any other country, so generalise. This is what my research focuses on. Similarly, as a tutor I am interested in inspiring children to want to understand the world around them rather than simply memorise facts.

I previously completed a masters degree at the University of Oxford in Neuroscience with an emphasis on molecular, cellular, systems, computational and cognitive neuroscience. My undergraduate degree was in Psychology at UCL where I studied human and animal behaviour grounded in both empirical research and theory. I completed several Developmental Psychology courses where I gained knowledge on the developmental processes that happen to children as they develop into adulthood.

I have been involved in several volunteering schemes, such as mentoring at IntoUniversity where I tutored a 12-year old mentee in general science classes and also helped her improve her public speaking skills. By the end of the academic year I spent with her she was able to give a presentation at a celebration event at BlackRock London Office in front of around 50 people. I also volunteered as a mental health befriender at One Westminster where I provided someone suffering from severe mental health problems with extra social support that she needed.
