About Thomas
I'm a freelance illustrator and cartoonist with seven year’s professional experience. Following my studies at Central Saint Martins I have taken commissions and exhibited in high profile galleries in central London such as The Crypt in Trafalgar Square and the Foundling Museum in Bloomsbury. My work has attracted the attention of national media such as my reinterpretation of William Hogarth's iconic piece 'Gin Lane'.
I enjoy working with students and supporting them in their own areas of interest. After observing the many tutors that I have studied under - from school classes, through to degree level and professional development - I believe that the most important thing I can do for a creative student is to understand what aspect of art inspires them and then to guide the development of that inspiration. I'm can tailor my classes to help my students achieve whatever creative goals they are aiming for, whether it be securing a place at a top art’s school, finding the right course, to building basic drawing skills or preparing for exams.
I believe that having fundamental drawing skills in any area of the visual arts is a huge advantage. These skills allow the artist to build A strong visual foundation for their work, and enable them to more freely explore the medium they choose, whether that be a painting, animation, or even film or photography. I enjoy supporting my students in understanding that drawing is a skill that, like any other, can be improved by applying theory to practice.
During my own studies and through my own professional work, I have learned to apply an analytical approach to image making. Through this experience, I have developed an in-depth knowledge in a broad range of mediums and artistic techniques. In tutoring, I draw on this to teach a variety of different artistic areas, from painting, through to sculpture, and the digital arts. I am always happy to talk through any areas a student might wish to explore, to help understand how they can best supported to grow and learn, and also to share more detail about my own work and background.
