About Maria Eleni

Hey there! My name is Mariaeleni but most people call me Mel. I chose to study English Literature at university because I wasn't sure which direction my professional career would be taking yet. Writing essays was always something I loved doing so I thought I would get a degree in it! During my Bachelors I studied a range of cultures and social movements which informed the way I interpreted the works I was reading. With my Greek heritage and interest in sociology I quickly realised the angle I would specialise in. I ended up taking lessons in Native American and American Literature & history as well as Classical and Biblical studies. Both very relevant in all aspects of my writing. I also developed an interest for literary theory and criticism which I applied religiously to my analysis. Following my BA, I went on to read MSc Human Rights and Politics at LSE where I employed the knowledge I gained to explore topics more directly related to real-world politics. The more I wrote, the more I realised that politics too is a theory which invites criticism. My dissertation analysed how language has shaped American politics and civil political inclinations under Trump. During my time as a student I did find that sometimes it was difficult to remain motivated, and this was often due to the fact that I felt a disconnection from my professors. As such my lessons are friendly, structured, and collaborative to ensure that honest work is done on both sides: we break tasks down together so you leave each session with concrete steps and hopefully an incentive to write! Whether you’re aiming for top grades or just want essays to feel less stressful, I’ll meet you at your level and build your confidence bullet point by bullet point. After two degrees I believe it is safe to say I am fairly well-read, and though I have now graduated, I still get the essay-writing itch from time to time. This is why I have decided to teach the art of putting thoughts into paragraphs at Superprof!

Although powerful technologies are now increasingly embedded in academic life, using generative AI for the purpose of essay writing remains a persistent weak point. In my view, it is because there is no one writing method to mimic - no system can fully reproduce the originality of an individual thinker’s interpretation, which is at the heart of good academic writing. With that said, AI is a good research tool and students should learn how to use it augmentatively. Lessons will each be 45'. For one essay I would recommend 4 lessons to be split in sections: 1st - Breaking down the designated title & brainstorming ideas, tracing knowledge and stance. Introduction and thesis statement will also be drafted in this lesson. 2nd - Constructing the skeleton for the main body. Splitting ideas into paragraphs and expanding through critics and historical / cultural (etc.) contexts. The point of this is to have three-to-four-line bullet points which will resemble full sentences. This will help the student with actually turning notes into paragraphs. 3rd - Writing a strong conclusion and bringing together the discussed topics of the essay. Student will then have to go home and connect all extensive notes into essay form. 4th - Student hands in work and we go over it in real time. If more guidance is needed, we arrange accordingly for more lessons. This lesson format applies to students of all levels and mobilises the methods and feedback given to me during my time as a student.
