About Xiaoying Echo

Originally from China and based in New York City, I am a Mandarin educator with experience teaching learners from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. My teaching approach is highly personalized. Rather than following the same textbook structure for every student, I focus on identifying your specific pain points—whether that’s pronunciation, sentence structure, vocabulary, confidence, listening, or simply knowing how to sound more natural in real conversations. As a bilingual educator and cross-cultural communicator, I’m especially interested in the cultural side of language. Mandarin is not only about saying something “correctly”; tone, context, relationship, and cultural expectations can completely change how something sounds. I help students understand these nuances and overcome cultural barriers, especially when communicating with Chinese friends, colleagues, clients, or family members. I hold an MFA and have a background in filmmaking and storytelling, which makes my lessons conversational, creative, and connected to real-life situations. I also have professional experience as a Mandarin immersion and bilingual Lead Teacher in New York City. Whether you are learning Mandarin for daily conversation, work, relationships, travel, or a deeper connection with Chinese culture, I will adapt each lesson around your goals, background, and learning style. My goal is simple: help you find what is actually holding you back and make Mandarin feel more natural, useful, and truly yours.

About the lesson

My Mandarin lessons are designed around you—not a fixed textbook or one-size-fits-all curriculum. I work especially well with adult learners from different cultural and professional backgrounds. In our first few lessons, I focus on identifying your specific pain points: What makes you hesitate when speaking? Why do your sentences sound correct but not quite natural? Is pronunciation holding you back, or is it actually vocabulary, sentence structure, confidence, or cultural context? One important part of my teaching is helping you understand how Chinese people actually communicate. Sometimes a sentence can be grammatically correct but sound too formal, too direct, too distant, or simply “not Chinese” in a particular situation. I help you understand these subtle differences in tone, context, and culture, so you can communicate more naturally and confidently. Lessons can be customized around your real life—whether you want Mandarin for daily conversation, dating and relationships, work and business, travel, Chinese friends or family, or simply connecting more deeply with Chinese culture. Depending on your level and goals, we can work on: * Natural conversation and speaking confidence * Pronunciation and tones * Practical vocabulary and sentence patterns * Chinese cultural context and communication styles * Professional or situation-specific Mandarin * Personalized correction of your recurring mistakes My goal is not simply to teach you more Mandarin. It is to figure out what is stopping you from using the Mandarin you already know—and help you break through that barrier.
