About Alex
I am a Brandeis graduate who has been an English tutor for high school students for the past five years. I have taught everything from IELTS/TOEFL and SAT/ACT English prep, English grammar, writing (especially formal academic essays), reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and more. I have taught about 100 students and also worked as a college counselor, so I have experience perfecting those creative personal statements and supplemental essays. Every single one of my students has reached their goal score on SAT/ACT and IELTS/TOEFL, and my guidance was integral in helping build strong foundations in English comprehension before teaching specific test-taking strategies to boost my students' success.

I primarily work with high school students, though I also have experience working with college students and younger kids as well. My approach to teaching is to guide my students through an intuitive learning process, where they learn from logical patterns, practice, and examples. With test prep, I like to break down specific question types and write out the steps for how to tackle them - e.g. recalling the main idea, skimming for evidence in a reading passage to support a particular answer, or eliminating wrong answer choices. With essay writing, I teach my students how to write both comprehensive and quick outlines to organize their thoughts before writing. All throughout my lessons, I am very encouraging and use mistakes as opportunities to reinforce topics we are learning about. I am very patient, but I'm also happy to pick up the pace for students who are in a time crunch or learn at a faster pace.
