About Madison

I am a current student at the University of York taking my Bachelor's Degree in English and Related Literature. I love studying and analysing texts and it is my hope to help students gain the same level of enthusiasm when it comes to their learning. I think teaching is all about establishing confidence between pupils and their subjects, and so my aim in tutoring is always to focus on building that confidence and enjoyment that most pupils struggle to connect with, especially when learning English. I have been tutoring for a year now and have learnt that most students just need a boost that can be found through one-to-one teaching, and if I can make sure all of my students are at least that little bit more confident in English, then I have done my job right.

About the lesson

I focus my teaching for each individual student, adapting my teaching methods for what works best for you. As a typical structure, I start every lesson with a starter activity to make my lessons familiar to what students would expect at school while also slowly introducing the topic of the day to them. The majority of the lesson will then consist of multiple activities made to engage students in their learning. These may involve personalised and interactive slideshows with visual elements to keep pupils engaged, or focused annotating and writing activities to push students into those higher grade boundaries. I then like to finish all lessons with a short plenary discussion in which I will ask pupils what they thought they did well in and what they feel must be improved on before I provide any feedback for the day. I like to keep my lessons within an hour period as I have found that longer sessions impair focus, but I am willing to stretch lessons to 2 hours if this format would work better for the student. This is the structure I have mostly maintained and adapted over a year period and has appeared to work for most if not all of my previous students. My lessons are for all pupils currently studying their GCSEs or A Levels whether they are in their final year or wanting to get a head start and I am willing to take on all students regardless of their learning level, target grade, or SEND needs.
