About Debra
I had the opportunity to tutor for three years at the community college. There were many students whose second language was English. They had little confidence in writing as it was not in their native tongue. Part of my approach was to explore their ideas in other formats; brainstorming, bullet points, line by line editing, etc. In exposing their ideas in a less structured format, we were able to work together to construct a text that fit the requirements of the assignment and expressed their perception of the assigned works. During my B.A. and M.A. programs I mentored students, was a teacher's assistant, and a student presenter. I took every class offered, throughout my degree programs, that dealt with teaching English, and excelled in them. I discovered that it is vital to teach not just the lessons and explain the devices, but to provide the necessary elements for the students feel confident in their perceptions and abilities.

Writing is the basis of education and most employment. Being confident in that ability can make the academic and career pursuit easier. Teaching to the student, based on their own learning style can dramatically increase the odds of success. In providing options for expression, using multi-modal literary devices as well as exploring writing styles and literary tropes, allows the student to discover what resonates with them. Writing daily and being exposed to many forms of writing is necessary for a successful student. I provide daily writing prompts, opportunities for discussion and analyzation of literature, as well as writing exercises developed based on the individuals specific needs. Whether its a job application, a college entrance essay, or a Master's thesis, to be able to confidently write well is something that can be done by anyone that has the desire to do so.
