About Ryan
I remember finding English so difficult in Secondary school when my English teachers would regularly (sometimes year-on-year) expect me to just "do" English with instructions like "how does the poem make you feel?" and "just write a paragraph answering that question". I thought there had to be a better way to understanding how our language and its meanings work. Fortunately, my 2 degrees in English helped me figure this out, and consequently inspired me to get into teaching in Secondary schools with an aim to help students like me.
With my background in the more methodical, scientific realm of Linguistics, I believed I could help students who were like me, and needed more concrete and actionable steps to "doing English" and inspire confidence: creative writing was an area I (and many other students I've since taught) found difficult, yet there are numerous ways to revise and practice for this beyond just being a naturally good writer.
I've been teaching for 8 years now as a fully-qualified English teacher, and I believe I'm ready to go beyond my pupils at school and help others, too, who may be struggling. I believe a teacher and student need to work together, and so I am ready to invest time and effort into someone who wants to push themselves to get the grades they want to get!

English is generally considered a "wishy washy" subject with "no wrong answers", yet the assessments (GCSEs, A Levels, even degree work) clearly believe there's a right and wrong way to explore this subject.
My approach to handling this is a methodical one - over the last 8 years of teaching, I've created numerous ways of breaking down the confusing and fluffy elements of English into simple, strategic and repeatable steps which has helped now thousands of my KS3, KS4 and KS5 students achieve their targets and beyond.
My lessons run for 1 hour and are custom-made for each individual student's needs - whether it's KS3 English, GCSE English Language or Literature, or even A Level English Language: I will work with you to help you improve!
I also believe providing model answers helps students "see" what good answers look like so we can unpack what is required for each question of any exam. I've even marked for the AQA exam boards for A Level, so I have "behind the scenes" knowledge of what the exams require for English Language - a notoriously difficult set of exams!
