About Erika
Although I did not apply to graduate university I took English and Psychology courses through to the 400 level. I was planning to be a high school teacher and volunteered as a TA for two years. Circumstances in the global economy at the time I would have graduated made being a teacher a non-viable job and I have since switched careers to owning my own businesses. Since I am my own boss my hours are flexible and I can accommodate time needs for students on a case by case basis.
My primary areas of study was Literary Critical Theory and Cognitive Psychology, and I have kept up to date on my own research in these areas as a hobby. I was also a part of the Editor's Association of Canada for two years and freelanced for self published authors.
I am familiar with MLA formatting, can explain how to write outlines, drafts, and edit essays, find comparative ways to understand materials and confidently aide students with neurodivergences or other learning impediments.
I enjoy teaching and helping others, the satisfaction of a "lightbulb moment" in a student is a large part of the reason I wanted to become a teacher in the first place. Since changing careers I would like to put the knowledge I gained in my various experiences to good use in helping students excel and find ways to apply their own knowledge in a variety of subjects as well as real life.

I use an adaptive teaching method to enable all students to understand the material and re-express it for their assignments. This includes finding alternative ways to understand materials such as using analogy, comparison, or real life situations. An example would be turning classic literature such as Shakespeare into modern day dialogue.
As a neurodivergent person, I am easily able to help students who also have learning, comprehension and retention issues due to autism, ADHD, dyslexia or other physiological learning impediments.
I am able to work with students in British Columbia grades 10-12. I can assist with university prep as well such as how to research, write, edit and format essays.
