About Emily

Hello, I’m Emily — a highly experienced tutor with over 11 years of success helping children prepare for the 11+ and other selective entrance exams. I provide personalised support in English, Maths, VR and NVR, helping students build the skills and confidence they need to gain entry to top grammar and independent schools.

I hold a PhD in English Literature and have extensive experience working with children with a wide range of learning styles and personalities, including those with special educational needs such as dyslexia, autism, and ADHD. My sessions are calm, structured, and supportive — tailored to suit each child’s pace and needs, whether that means breaking down tricky concepts or helping them build confidence in timed conditions.

I’m also highly familiar with the different 11+ exam formats used by grammar and independent schools (including GL, CEM, and school-specific papers), and I draw on a wide range of carefully selected resources that are appropriate for each student’s target schools and learning level. This includes past papers, vocabulary-building tools, reasoning practice, and creative writing prompts that align with entrance criteria.

I specialise in:

- 11+ comprehension, composition, verbal and non-verbal reasoning
- Core Maths skills and word problems
- Time management, exam technique, and confidence building
- Supporting students who benefit from a flexible and personalised approach

I also work closely with families to guide them through the admissions process — from timelines and resource planning to supporting learning at home in a low-stress, sustainable way.

My aim is not just to prepare children for the exam, but to help them feel confident, capable, and proud of what they can achieve.

About the lesson

My approach is to take the stress out of learning by creating a calm, structured environment where students feel safe to make mistakes, ask questions, and grow in confidence. I aim for high achievement, but never at the expense of a student’s wellbeing or enjoyment.

I take a thorough, step-by-step approach to teaching — ensuring that students build strong foundations in key skills before moving on. I focus not only on exam technique and revision strategies, but also on helping students understand, appreciate, and even enjoy the subject they’re studying.

Each lesson is tailored to the individual learner. I adapt my teaching style and resources to suit their pace, personality, and goals. I also look for ways to connect the material to their interests wherever possible, making lessons engaging and relevant.

Above all, my aim is to help students feel confident, capable, and proud of their progress — whether they’re preparing for competitive entrance exams or simply trying to improve in a subject they’ve found challenging.
