About Naomi
I have always read widely and had an eclectic taste in literature so it’s rare that I meet someone with whom I don’t share a liking for at least one writer. This has proved invaluable as a tutor because establishing a point of connection with a tutee or tutor group helps to establish a good rapport which is so foundational to creating a strong and productive working relationship. I am convinced that I serve my students best by aiming beyond the exam and enabling them to sharpen their reading skills so that they approach texts confidently, critically and intelligently for life. If I’ve done my job, my students ought to leave our sessions with a greater appetite for the subject than they started.
I tutored Shakespeare, Victorian Fiction, Modern Drama and Fin-de-Siècle Fiction at Durham University between 2010 and 2014 where I was also a research assistant in the Philosophy Department and a doctoral candidate specialising in Robert Louis Stevenson’s fiction. I held a Research Fellowship at Brunel University between 2016 and 2018 where I worked on Dickens and I am a founding member of the Edwardian Culture Network.
My teaching and tutoring experience in schools has developed alongside my academic study. I ran tutorials on exam technique and revision strategy in secondary schools around the North East between 2010 and 2012. Since 2013 I have privately tutored candidates for GCSE, A Level, KS2 SATs and common entrance examinations and I have devised and run GCSE workshops on The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in the classroom.
In 2020, along with the rest of the nation, I found myself tutoring my own young children in KS1 literacy, phonics and numeracy. All three of my children progressed in their learning beyond the expected level. As a Foundation Governor at their school I have grown in my understanding and experience of working with primary children and so I would also be willing to take on primary tuition.
