About Melanie

I am a full-time English as a New Language teacher in New York City. I have been teaching English for 26 years and have worked with ages 5 to 80! My undergraduate degree is from the University of Michigan where I studied English Language and Literature. My Master's Degree in Education is from Teachers College, Columbia University where I specialized in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I also hold a Master's in Social Work from New York University as well as teaching licenses in New York City for both English Language Arts and English as a Second Language. I am an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction and I enjoy exploring both my own city and new cities when I travel. My favorite thing about meeting new students is getting to know their individual stories and seeing their pride in their own learning. I teach English because I love helping people communicate. When my students are learning English, I take the approach that we are adding to their already existing communication skills. I look for ways to build on your interests and make the lessons specifically for you. I use a wide range of resources to give you the experience that is best suited for your needs. My process involves an intake meeting where we communicate about your goals and if you have already started to learn English, we discuss your previous experience learning English so that I can get a sense of you as a learner and what has worked (and not worked) for you in the past. Then, if we decide to work together, I present you with a personalized learning plan, which we revisit every 3 months. My goal in teaching you English is to make myself irrelevant-- I build your independence so that you can learn on your own. I am proficient in Google Suite and often use this with my students to facilitate lessons (for example, I will make and share Google Slides specific to your needs or we will work in a shared Google Doc so that we can attend to your Reading and Writing skills in real time). If you are not yet proficient in using online tools, this can be part of our lessons as these skills are essential for your professional opportunities. Most students commit to 3 months of weekly lessons at a time in order to reach their goal, but if you have a short-term project, we can create a schedule around your goals.

About the lesson

Working with me as your English teacher means that you get 1:1 support on what YOU need. I tailor each lesson to each individual student, bringing in resources that are specific to your needs and goals. I offer assessment of all skills in English (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) as well as practical solutions to help you gain the skills that will drive your English forward. I have experience teaching all levels and ages. Lessons are usually 30-60 minutes, depending on your schedule. Most students choose to meet 1-2x/week but if you need a more intensive schedule, I can be flexible. My available hours are 3:00pm-10:00pm, Monday-Friday Eastern Standard Time and weekends by appointment. Lessons take place on Zoom. Students should have access to a tablet or computer for some lessons (Reading, Writing), but we can work by phone for Speaking/Listening. Please get in touch so we can see if we are a good match!
