About Issy

I am a 3rd year undergraduate flautist studying at the Royal College of Music. I especially enjoy working with younger people, with most of my experience stemming from classroom work in primary and secondary schools but I welcome students of all ages. Having studied the flute for almost 12 years, I have a lot of experience and knowledge to pass on, and I want to be able to inspire others with my love of the flute.

I have had previous pupils aged 8 to 12 years, mostly focusing on beginner to intermediate standard. But my wealth of outreach and classroom teaching, combined with the skills gained during my time at RCM such as the RCM Sparks outreach scheme, make me well equipped for teaching students of all standards.

About the lesson

I like to keep my lessons friendly but engaging- I don’t stick to specific lesson plans, but I like to tailor lessons around my students as much as possible! In order for my pupils to learn as effectively as possible, I utilise tutor and method books, to give lessons structure. I’m keen for students to discover music that they enjoy, and so would encourage them to explore all genres and provide inspiration and repertoire lists to aid this. A typical session would differ from student to student, but I would ensure to focus on a particular aspect of technique, and follow through by applying this to repertoire. In face to face lessons, I think it’s important for pupils to learn via listening as much as playing, so I would incorporate teacher/student duets, to allow the students to experience a sense of chamber/ensemble playing. Online lessons would be very similar, but I am always keen to inspire pupils by encouraging them to play along to recordings, and listen to other performers too to expand their learning.
