About Catherine

I have served as a teaching assistant for GNUR 5390: Intro to US Healthcare at the University of Virginia, tutored high schoolers at Collegiate School and middle schoolers at Quioccasin Middle School in Richmond, VA.

I take joy in seeing students confusion disappear and be replaced with confidence while answering questions.

About the lesson

I begin by meeting the students and gain an understanding of their goals, struggles, techniques they currently practice to study, and what their curriculum looks like. I request students bring samples of their homework and/or previous quizzes/tests and/or syllabus (the more info the better!) to gain better insight into what knowledge their teachers are testing. Subsequent meetings are tailored to the student based on this information.

I start sessions by answering any immediate questions the student has. Then I give the student problems to work on. I watch their problem solving processes and try to encourage the student to figure out as much as they can on their own before I begin offering hints. If a student is completely stuck, I will demonstrate a problem before giving them a similar problem to work through using the same strategies I show them.

I will also give the student the option to answer a few questions between sessions to keep their knowledge fresh. I will review the answers with them during the following session. I am aware of the stress placed on students these days, so I am understanding if these questions do not get answered or if the student requests to keep all questions within our session times.

My lessons for college students include Intro Biology, Biochemistry, Intro Physics

My lessons for high school students include Biology (AP), Geometry and Trigonometry, Chemistry, Intro Physics (AP physics I), and *English*

My lessons for middle school students includes all subjects

**Note about English/humanities tutoring: This follows a much different format. I will ask students to bring sample papers they have written and provide feedback on how to improve. Students can also utilize me as a resource for writing papers -- provided their instructor has given permission. I do NOT write papers for students, but I offer suggestions on how to make their writing clearer. Often times, I will focus on paragraph flow/structure with some punctuation recommendations.
