I have a very particular reading comprehension and writing process that I have developed over the years. It can work for anything from a Comparative Lit paper to a full blown thesis to a one page resume. I focus on flow, keeping the reader engaged, with an emphasis on strong beginning and ending paragraphs. If Literature is where we're headed, I have read all of the classics, both modern and, well, classic, and am well versed in Shakespeare, Faulkner, Steinbeck, etc.
