About Rachel

I am a cellist, educator and researcher with over 15 years of experience. I am passionate about music education, and love the creativity of teaching. I am currently a senior cello and musicianship teacher for a music charity, alongside working with other teachers as a lecturer and mentor on a PGCEi course accredited by Birmingham City University. I stay up to date with the latest developments in music education, and believe that all students deserve access to the very best lessons. I have an undergraduate degree in music from the University of Oxford and a Masters from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and am in the final stages of a PhD at King's College London. I teach a wide range of students, from pre-instrumental Kodaly-based musicianship lessons in early years to beginner cellists to post-diploma level advanced students. I have taught both adults and children, and also teach music theory, harmony and musicianship alongside the cello.

About the lesson

I am a highly qualified and experienced teacher, who has been working in a number of settings for over 15 years. I currently work as a senior cello and musicianship teacher for a well-respected music charity, and have previously taught in a number of prestigious private schools as well as maintaining a busy private practice. I also mentor other educators, and lecture on a PGCEi course for instrumental teachers. I have degrees from the University of Oxford and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and am in the final stages of completing a PhD from King's College London. I perform as a freelance modern and baroque cellist, with a particular love for continuo playing.

I strongly believe that music lessons should be full of joy and creativity, and tailored to each individual student. I teach holistically, with a strong foundation in technique and music theory taught in a musical, collaborative way. My particular area of expertise is teaching children, and I absolutely love the challenge of working with beginner students. However, I also teach up to an advanced, post-diploma level and am equally comfortable teaching adults. I am happy to work towards music exams if they are part of a student's goals and have had consistent success in doing so, but they are not the main focus of my teaching.

I teach from my home studio in Sydenham, but am also available for online lessons. I am happy to teach 30, 45 or 60 minute lessons as requested.
