About Alex
I am Alex Postings, and I have been tutoring professionally since 2018. I began as a qualified ESL teacher before moving into KS3 and KS4 English Language and Literature, with most of my work focused on GCSE support across AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas and IGCSE.
I have worked with more than 40 students who went on to improve by 1–2 GCSE grades, with a smaller number improving by 3–4 grades. A major part of that progress has come from understanding mark schemes, knowing how strong answers are built, and finding ways to explain difficult skills in a way each student can actually understand.
I am supportive and easy to talk to, but I also expect students to participate and apply what we cover. My aim is not simply to get them through the next exam question. I want them to become stronger writers, clearer thinkers and more independent users of English.

Parents should be able to see what their child is working on, what is improving and what still needs attention. I start by finding where the student is getting stuck.
That could be understanding the question, knowing where to begin, developing an idea, analysing a quotation, structuring an essay, creative writing or managing exam time.
Then I teach that skill clearly. We practise it together. I correct mistakes while the work is still fresh. If one explanation does not work, I try another. I also avoid relying on endless past papers. I
use different texts, topics and examples to teach the same underlying skills, including material connected to the student’s interests where useful.
Competence leads to confidence.
As students understand what they are doing and can see themselves improving, they usually become more independent and more confident in school and exams.
A first lesson also gives me a chance to see how the student approaches the work, identify the main priorities and see whether we are a good fit to work together.
I keep parents informed about what we are working on and what still needs attention. If I feel tuition is not producing enough progress to justify the time and cost, I will say so.
