After decades of teaching experience in different disciplines, I am confident in my abilities as an educator. About the lesson

My classroom and tutoring style stems from my hardships in college. Ironically, it would be insights from my troubles that would lead me to a niche in my tutoring business. In college, my executive function skills were not present. I had no structure in place to study or prepare myself for learning. Eventually, I realized I needed a consistent quiet place to study, a good comfortable workstation, I had to keep my school materials organized, budget my time each day, and make sure that I was getting enough sleep and food. When I pulled all this together soon college was not as stressful. The anxiety levels dropped significantly. I had created a basic set of executive functions to transport me through college.

Many times working with students struggling in math or physics I discover they do not have any executive functions in place at all. Math and math-based subjects require thought and practice. If a student is unorganized and lazy chances are they will be struggling in math.

It was for this reason I started asking questions about the student's procedures for I knew this was a major cause of the problems with difficult subjects. This became standard protocol at the beginning of each session., where the student and I check grades, schedule for upcoming items, and schedule for daily assignments. The goal is for the student to learn to govern their school responsibilities, eventually on their own.

After updating the student's workload, we get to work on whatever has been scheduled. Most of the time this consists of math or science work. If appropriate, I will teach ahead for Math classes and others, so the student gets in front of the class. This gives the student more time to process the material and gain deeper learning.

Lastly, I have experience in writing screenplays and short narratives from my film background. It is from this area that I have helped many students combine executive functions in an essay assembly line, which helps students write essays in a series of steps with each step getting closer to the final draft.

I have found when students gain confidence in managing their school work their view on academia changes dramatically.
