About Patricia

I am an experienced tutor versed in various subjects with an anti-oppressive, democratic and participatory style of engagement. I am a successful academic researcher who is engaged in consultancy work, undertaking a PhD and involved in politics. I have demonstrable experience of achieving top results for myself and my students and have worked with young people of all ages including those who have been removed from mainstream schools and are now being educated in alternative schools. I also have extensive experience in behaviour management and have the ability to engage learners with complex needs successfully. I am a skilled researcher and also have the capacity to provide support at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I recently researched, taught and assessed a course on applied criminal psychology with a 100% pass rate. Nominee for ‘Justice in the Community Award’ 2014: 01/11/2014 Nominated for prestigious Northern Ireland Department of Justice award in recognition of my ‘keep safe’ work with young people excluded from school in socially/economically deprived areas across Belfast, Northern Ireland. Department of Employment and Learning Doctoral Scholarship 28/09/2015 Researched, designed and authored a research proposal securing a research studentship to provide for worth £54,150 of funding for a 3 year doctoral-level project. William J. Clinton Leadership Institute Inspiring Leader Awardee 17/12/2015 Recipient of prestigious award in recognition of my leadership style, ability and completion of a service based project at QUB. Washington Ireland Program for Leadership and Service Scholar 12/02/2016 Chosen out of 500 applicants to participate in a 12 month personal and professional development programme between Washington DC and Ireland/Northern Ireland. This involved working as a congressional intern for Senator John McCain, taking part in leadership training and enacting service for 2 charitable organisations. The value of this award was £10,000. Student-Led Initiative Awardee 25/04/2017 Awarded funding for the establishment and operationalisation of a board-level mentorship scheme. I secured a collaborative partnership between QUB Graduate School and The office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments Northern Ireland whereby 25 postgraduate students received training and 6 months board level experience and mentoring. Researcher Plus 14/12/2017 Awarded Researcher Plus in recognition of various extracurricular activities undertaken in the development of employability skills which are transferable beyond the PhD to both academic and non-academic careers. Sir Thomas Dixson Award 18/04/2018 Designed and authored an international research proposal for which I was awarded £500 to engage in cultural activities in Washington DC and West Palm Florida when investigating the issue of educational marginalisation. Cumberland Lodge Scholar 11/05/2018 Cumberland Lodge is a registered charity with the vision of more peaceful, open and inclusive societies. The Lodge specialises in equipping and inspiring people to learn from one another and engage in constructive dialogue on the causes and effects of social divisions, including leaders and influencers, students and practitioners. As first doctoral researcher from Northern Ireland to be awarded scholarship status, I was selected out of 250 applicants to aid the facilitation of inter-disciplinary, cross-sector conferences and lectures by working collaboratively, engaging in cross-disciplinary discussions and writing blogs and short reports for different audiences. Scholars are assisted to develop public engagement, networking, communication and event co-ordination skills. What type of education have you received? Queen’s University Belfast PhD Education (forthcoming) My research is examining young people’s experiences of exclusion from mainstream school within the context of Northern Ireland. The main aim of this thesis is to provide a conceptualisation of exclusion from the perspective of young people who have experienced marginalisation via the use of arts-based creative methods. This is the first study of its kind in Northern Ireland.
